The Campanile di Giotto, to the right of Santa Maria del Fiore, was designed by the architect Giotto and started by the artist in 1334. It was continued by Andrea Pisano after Giotto’s death in 1337; however it was only completed in 1359 by the architect Francesco Talenti. There was once a passage that connected the tower to the Duomo, but this was demolished around 1437. There is still evidence of this with relief’s carved on the side where the passage once existed, created by Luca della Robbia.
