On a hill where the first settlement was set up is where you can find the 7th Century church of Santa Maria di Castello. It is believed to be the church for the worship of the Marian cult. The church was taken away from the Canons and given to the Dominicans by Pope Eugenio IV in 1441. The following year the Dominicans built a convent thus starting the transformation visible today. It was in the 11th Century that the convent became a cathedral.
