Basilica di S.M. Assunta in Carignano
Piazza Carignano, Genoa 16128 - Italy

Map
It is said that the Basilica di S.M. Assunta in Carignano was constructed because of a wish in the will of Bendinello Sauli in order to humiliate the Fieschi family. The story goes that the family committed a grave injustice to the Sauli clan by starting mass in their nobleman’s church without waiting for them. Construction had to wait for nearly 70 years before there was enough money to begin and work was carried out by Perugian architect Galeazzo Alessi. This 14th Century building became the most imposing Renaissance church in Genoa and was finally completed in 1602.
