The building that houses the Bargello Museum dates back to 1255. In the 16th Century it was a prison as well as the residence of the head of police, and in the 19th Century it was given over to the National Museum. Visitors can see the bust of Brutus and the David-Apollo statue along with other Michelangelo works of art. Works by Donatello include statues of David in marble and of St George and David in bronze. Also on display are Roman and Byzantine ivories, medieval enamels, German and French goldsmith’s work, Renaissance jewellery, small bronzes and weapons.
