The Archaeological Park of Egnazia has finds of the ancient town of Gnathia, located on the old road connecting Bari and Brindisi. The walls here are thought to date back to the Messapian age. Outside the walls was the necropolis known as the ‘western one’, containing tombs of various eras, while within the walls were pre-Roman tombs. Egnazia ceramic painted vases have been found in the necropolis. Arcades overlooked the city square, and the Roman centre would have included the basilica, the Eastern gods’ sacellum, the amphitheatre, and the forum. Guided tours are available on request.
