The Acquedotto Medievale still follows the original route constructed during the Roman Empire era, covering over 40 kilometres inland. Part of this ancient viaduct winds through the city, with sections visible close to the Palazzo S. Giorgio and in the Castello area of the city. Close to the Valbisagno is a very impressive bridge carrying the water and passes over the Genova-Est motorway toll booths. The aqueduct was still in use after the First World War, but is now only used by the Servizio Giardini e Foreste inside the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno.
