The Abbey of S. Stefano was rebuilt around the 12th and 14th centuries on the former site of a Benedictine Abbey dating back to 960. It’s an important religious medieval building, as is San Siro Abbey. See the beautiful Romanesque apse, the crypt, which has five naves and encircles the remains of the primitive Longobard church of Saint Michele, whom it is believed was baptised as Christopher Columbus, his father being a warden of port of Olivella. Dominated by the large painting of the Martyrdom of San Stefano by Giulio Romano, it was slightly damaged by the bombing of WWII.
