Varano Island is a strip of land of sandy soil covering around 154 hectares that divides the Adriatic Sea from Lake Varano. At 10 km long and just 500 m wide it comes under the territory of Cagnano Varano and Foce Varano, which is a hamlet of Ischitella. This nature reserve forms part of the Gargano National Park. Varano Island has a thick forest of Eucalypti, Aleppo pines and Maquis that stretch as far as its shore.
