Ussel Castle was commissioned by Ebalo di Challant in the 15th Century on a site that was once a prehistoric settlement. Amazingly, the castle is still almost completely intact, spreading as it does into a central residential area and having two side sections which housed the servants quarters. The building has been used as both a prison and a barracks. There were renovations to the structure during the late 1990s and now the castle hosts temporary exhibitions. There are magnificent views from the roof of the parapet walk.
