Alberobello is perhaps best known for the trulli and has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Trulli are limestone dwellings famed in the southern region of Puglia and are constructed using a mortar-less method - a prehistoric building technique. They have grey pyramidal, domed, or conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs and the main body of the dwellings are whitewashed each year. The roofs have strange symbols which are attached to Christian, primitive, and magic traditions. Their origin involved a political feud which resulted in homes that were able to be dismantled in a single night.
