Within the Po Delta Park is the Comacchio salt works, a flat area, which is a popular site for bird watchers. Here are the Casoni - buildings in which the ancient salt extraction works were once based. It covers an area of around 600 hectares, with canals and shallow salt water basins. There are large flocks of flamingos and, because they feed on the plentiful brine shrimp with their pigmented micro-organisms, the birds here have a particularly fine pink colour.
