St. Rufino Cathedral was begun by Bishop Clarissimus in 1134 from the designs of Giovanni da Gubbio. The façade is a classical Umbrian-Spoletian style with much decoration including sculptures and bas-reliefs. Inside, it has 3 aisles of 1571 which have been modified to Renaissance style by Galeazzo Alessi. The font is one of the church’s original pieces and located in the right-side aisle. This font has seen some famous christenings including those of, St. Francis, St. Clare, and Frederick II of Swabia, who grew up in the imperial fortress of Assisi.
