St Clare, along with her companions, settled here in 1212. It was also here that St Francis wrote his Song of the Creatures (Cantico delle Creature) in 1224. There are beautiful 16th Century frescoes by Tiberio d’Assisi in the chapel and 14th Century frescoes in the apse. A passageway leads to the garden of St Clare passing the 15th Century ‘Crucifixion’ by Pier Antonio Mezzastris. More frescoes decorate the cloister and the refectory, including a depiction of the crucifix that allegedly spoke to St Francis.
