The SS. Vitale and Agricola Church was erected on the remains of the former Roman Arena. This, according to legend, is where the saints Vitale and Agricola were martyred, with their bodies being recognised by S. Ambrogio during his visit to Bologna in 392. The church was rebuilt by the Benedictine monks in the 16th Century. Here visitors can see valuable works of art - the Renaissance chapel of S. Maria degli Angeli is particularly worthy of note. The crypt is part of the original church.
