Scala di S. Maria del Monte
Piazza Umberto I, Caltagirone 95041 - Italy

Map
The Scala di S. Maria del Monte is a long flight of steps which connects the old part of Caltagirone and the new one. It consists of 142 stair treads which are decorated with multi-coloured majolica tile uprights. These are patterned with combinations of geometric and organic designs inspired by the animal kingdom, echoing Moorish, Norman, Spanish, Baroque and contemporary styles. Once a year on the nights of San Giacomo (24 and 25 July), the stairway becomes a fabulous sight when thousands of small coloured candles are placed on the steps and lit.
