The origin of the sanctuary in Biella is thought to date to S. Eusebio di Vercelli, from the 4th Century. The statue of the Madonna was brought from Palestine and is the work of San Luca. The chapel was built after 1200 and a simple basilica was built here after the plague in 1599 which became a popular destination for pilgrims. The basilica has 15th Century frescoes and a black Madonna with Child covered in gold and precious stones. The hospice is a complex of buildings with beautiful porticoes and balustrades.
