The Santuario della Pieta is home to a very famous painting from 1522 which depicts the dead Christ taken from the cross. There is an interesting story behind the picture: The wounds of Christ, who is shown between the Virgin Mary and Saint John, are said to have bled real blood. This miracle was believed to be a factor in the village of Cannobio escaping unscathed from the plague that devastated other villages around the lake. In 1575 San Carlo Borromeo had the church built after hearing about the miracle of the painting.
