The construction of the sanctuary in Angera is linked to a specific event: on 27 June 1657, a woman who was praying in front of the Madonna image saw the face of the Virgin crying blood. Work began in 1662 on the order of the Archbishop Litta of Milan; the architect was Gerolamo Quadrio. The bell tower was added in 1735 and the present-day façade is from 1943. Inside are frescoes depicting the Madonna with Child, which date back to 1443, and on the lateral walls there are frescoes attributed to Morazzone.
