The Santa Maria di Valleverde like many other Capitanata sanctuaries is linked to the pilgrims you travelled to the Grotto of the Archangel Michael. Many pilgrims from Irpinia and Sannio stopped to pay respect to the ‘Queen of the Sky’ and it was for them that Bishop Roberto built St Angelo’s Hospital at the start of the 13th Century. This is known as the Church of the Rosary where pilgrims could rest and receive aid when needed. Today the sanctuary is home to the Vocationist Brothers who continue to worship the Madonna and welcome pilgrims.
