The Aula Magna of the Bolognese Alma Mater Studiorum is now housed in what used to be the church of Santa Lucia. Rebuilt by the architect Girolamo Rainaldi it passed into the hands of the Jesuits in 1562. Enlargement works that were were planned by Francesco Maria Angelini were interrupted in 1723 but partially finished in the 19th Century. It was turned into the Aula Magna and inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1988 on the 9th centenary of the university.
