The convent of St Clare and the adjoining church was begun in 1257, three years after the saint’s death. The façade is of alternative strips of pink and white stone and has huge arches on either side. Inside there is a single nave, a transept and a polygonal apse. There is a wooden crucifix kept in the Cappella del Crocifisso which legend says spoke to St Francis in San Damiano, ordering him to repair the church. Behind the grate are relics of St Francis and St Clare and in a chapel is a 14th Century fresco by Puccio Capanna.
