San Sepolcro had been closed for nearly 28 years, but was reopened at the end of 1998. It has a surprisingly spacious interior that was completely restored and its treasures cleaned up after so many years of neglect. The best feature of the church is the amazing, huge gilded altarpiece that covers the whole of one wall. This was created in the 17th Century to hold the Madonna revered by the wife of one of the Spanish Viceroys after a supposed miracle.
