The church of Saint Mary of the Cross, in Casarano is the only link to the ancient village of Casaranello. It houses some remnants of Byzantine art, including some precious early Christian mosaics going back to the 5th Century. Many of the frescoes portray the Byzantine rule over the Otranto region. Inside, the walls and pillars of the nave are covered in portraits of the archangels Michael and Gabriel, Saint Barbara, a Virgin with Child and scenes showing the life and ‘passion’, death and resurrection of Jesus.
