Roncolo Castle was begun in 1237 by the nobles of Vanga. In the late 14th Century it was bought by the Vintler family, who added the north wing. This ‘summer palace’ was decorated with frescoes which depicted sagas, and knightly poems. By 1868 it had fallen into disrepair and was restored by Austrian Francis Joseph who gifted it to the town of Bolzano in 1893. Visitors can see the 14th Century, restored fresco work depicting knights and the court, games between ladies and cavaliers, tournaments, hunting scenes and animals. Inside the castle is also a typical trattoria.
