Along the lakeside from the Archaeological Museum in Desenzano del Garda is the Roman Villa. It dates back to the 1st Century BC. Extending for around a hectare, it is perhaps the most important example of a late-Roman villa in Northern Italy. It overlooks the lake and its paths were made up by piers and wharves. The mosaics show beautiful scenes in rich colours such as cupid grape-pickers, cupids on bigas in trials, maenads and satyrs, wild beasts, allegories of the four seasons, and Orpheus with a dog and a sheep.
