The Roman Amphitheatre in Cagliari is the most important monument from the classical period in Sardinia. Dating from the 2nd Century AD it was built to accommodate an audience of about 20,000 people. The amphitheatre still has the elliptic terrace, the cavea, the enclosure and the balcony from where the city elders would watch the games. This very rich archaeological site can be found at the foot of the Viale Buoncammino promenade, in the Palabanda valley. During the centuries, many of its flights of steps, for which it was called ‘centu scalas’ were removed and used as building material.
