The Palazzo Viceregio was once the home of the Piedmontese Kings of Sardinia, although they rarely occupied it. The building is also known as Palazzo Regio, though a large inscription names it Palazzo del Governo above a dedication to Carolus Emanuel III. He was a Savoy King who recognised many of the island’s institutions and founded Carloforte, on San Pietro. Of the rooms open to the public the best is the magnificent entrance with its formal portraits of the former Governors of the island. Of note are the low hung chandeliers and gold gilt work in the rooms.
