The Palaeontology Museum was founded at the beginning of the 19th Century and houses vast collections and fossils of shellfish and fish found in and around Sicily. Probably the best exhibit is the remarkable ‘Gioeni’ collection that has an original specimen of a dwarf elephant the skeleton of which is still in an excellent state of preservation. There is also a very large and extensive collection of Sicilian minerals and an interesting section on vulcanology.
