The Roman Ship Museum is dedicated to Comacchio’s Roman ship, an important archaeological find made in 1981 at Valle Ponti just a few kilometres from the lagoon city. Dating from the end of the 1st Century B.C. the ship is from the Imperial era and was used for maritime and river trade. The ship was found shipwrecked at the mouth of river, where it is thought it was trying to reach the markets up the Po Valley before getting caught in a storm. The ship is well preserved along as were artefacts found on board, buried by the sand.
