The Municipal Gallery is sited in an 18th Century building. The first works of art were exhibited in 1839 after Napoleon’s death, and the consequent Restoration, in an attempt to regain the pictures that were stolen for the town and to keep those in danger of degradation. There are some fine paintings here, added to by donations from private individuals and those bought by the Municipality. The biggest collection is that of Guercino’s paintings, but also of his followers, most of them from Cento.
