The Molentargius Natural Park in Cagliari is a rare example of wetlands to be found in a city area. The use of the pond as a source of salt is said to have started in ancient times, and just behind Poetto beach you can see the saltpans, with their extraordinary coloured waters that change colour depending on the concentration of salt. The whole area, which the Ramsar Convention, designated as one of the wetlands of international importance, is populated by many species of birds.
