Lake Varano is situated along the Adriatic coast and lies 8 km from Ischitella in Foggia. It is fed by underwater springs and is the largest lake in southern Italy covering 25 square miles. The lake is square in shape and is separated from the sea by a 6 mile barrier of sand known as Varano Island. One side of this ‘island’ is covered in woods of pine, eucalyptus and lentisk trees. Lake Varano is joined to the sea by two navigable canals, the Foce Varano and Foce Capoiale.
