Catania has a number of modern pieces of architecture and sculpture, and one of these is La Fontana dei Malavoglia which can be found in Piazza Giovanni Verga. The fountain is the work of the sculptor Carmelo Mendola. This is a relatively new piece, having been installed here in 1975. The idea behind it was to depict the night scene of the sinking of Providence, as described by Giovanni Verga in the novel ‘I Malavoglia’.
