The Duomo di Cerignola was erected by Giuseppe Pisanti from plans by Enrico Alvino and now dominates the Piazza Duomo. The Duomo is built from tuff and Trani stone, the latter used extensively in decorations. Standing at some 80 meters high, the magnificent dome has octagonal tambour and a lantern. The interior of the church houses an evocative 13th Century painting on wood that portrays the Madonna di Ripalta, the patron saint of the city. Folklore tells that the painting was found in a hollow of a high bank over the River Ofanto, 10km south of the city.
