The Cripta di Santa’Efisio is one of the oldest relics in the city and is just around the corner from the church of the same name. Its doorway leads down to a hypogea or cistern of the Punic-Roman city Karalis. Legend says a Roman soldier named Efisius from Asia Minor was imprisoned here before being taken to Nora to be executed. The column he was said to have been chained to is on view and is a place of worship for local believers. There is evidence of an earlier church dating back to the 5th Century.
