The Copertino castle, constructed on a previous Angionian fortress, was later extended and completed in 1540, thanks to Emperor Charles V’s architect Evangelista Menga. The castle is one of the most impressive fortified bastions in Salento and is distinctive for the excellent decorations on the door. The mannerist painter Gianserio Strafella from Copertino frescoed Saint Mark’s chapel within the castle. Local folklore states that Isabelle Chiaramente, daughter of Tristan and Catherina Orsini dal Balzo who later became Queen of Naples, was born here.
