Conversano Castle was built as a stronghold by the Normans in 1054. This huge structure, with its four towers, was erected on a trapezoidal plan with its four angles facing the four cardinal points. The castle had a number of halls and rooms including a sumptuous bedroom belonging to Giangirolamo II Acquaviva d’Aragona, which still has Paolo Finoglio’s frescoes. Today, the castle, which overlooks Castello Square, is a luxurious mansion complete with balconies added in the 1800s. It is in the hands of private owners, though some of the rooms are open to the public.
