The Civic Museum of Aci Castello is housed inside the imposing Norman castle which dates back to 1000. There are four sections of the museum: mineralogy, palaeontology, archaeology and the aquarium of Mediterranean. Minerals include those of Etna and other volcanoes as well as obsidian and flint finds. The palaeontology section displays ancient finds of invertebrates datable around 170-150 millions years ago. There are also teeth and the fossilized bones of vertebrates such as the Cervus Elaphus, dwarf elephant and Hippopotamus Pentlandi dating back to the Quaternary period.
