The Cimitero Monumentale La Certosa opened in 1801 with architect Ercole Gasparini designing the monumental entrance with its big statues atop great pillars. The portico was added in 1811 linking to the Sanctuary of San Luca. Etruscan tombs were discovered between 1869 and 1871, and led to archaeological excavations by the Bolognese archaeologist Antonio Zannoni. Material from the tombs, dated to the 6th-4th Century BC, is found in the Etruscan wing of the Archaeological Civic Museum. Also at the cemetery is the Ossuary of the fallen Partisans.
