Built and dedicated to Sant’Apollonia in the 12th Century, the Church of Sant’Apollonia o di Mezzaratta stands halfway along the road leading to the Colle dell’Osservanza. The cycles of frescoes originally painted in the church by Vitale da Bologna, Jacopo di Paolo, Simone de’ Crocifissi, Jacopo Avanzi and Jacopo da Bologna form a superb mixture of medieval Bolognese painting. These are now kept at the National Art Gallery built to reproduce the architecture of the church.
