Church of San Paolo Maggiore
Via dei Carbonesi, 18 Bologna 40123 - Italy

Map

It was Saint Paul’s Regular Clergymen who started building the church in 1606, which was completed in 1636 with Ercole Fichi’s wonderful façade. Inside, the vaults are colourful and frescoed by Antonio and Giuseppe Rolli, portraying Saint Paul in the Areopagus of Athens in the 17th Century. The paintings of Bologna artists on the altars are superb, like Guercino and Ludovico Carracci; on the high altar there is the group of sculptures with Saint Paul’s decapitation.
