Cathedral
Piazza Duomo, Bolzano 39100 - Italy

Map

The cathedral was begun in 1290 and completed in the early 15th Century. The campanile, with its fretwork spire by architect and sculpture, Hans Lutz von Schussenried, is 65 metres high and towers over the city. The façade is red and yellow marble adorned with gargoyles and balusters. Many frescoes were damaged in WWII but the ‘Stories of St. Christopher’ and ‘Madonna and child’ by Friedrich Pacherare are notable. Hans Lutz was responsible for the Gothic style carved stone pulpit in 1514. A small 13th Century statue of a Madonna breast-feeding is the work of Verona artists.
