The castle dates back to 1131 and was built on the site of a pre-existing Byzantine structure. Ruggero the Norman was thought to have built it but the original structure is from the Norman-Swabian era. Following damage by Guglielmo il Malo, the castle was restored between 1233 and 1240 by Frederick II of Swabia who incorporated the existing walls and towers into the new build. In the 16th Century Isabella of Aragon, and her daughter Bona Sforza decided to have a bastion wall built and also ordered modifications to the central courtyard by adding a flight of steps.
