The small fortress in Desenzano del Garda is situated on the hill which dominates the harbour and the surrounding area. Originally the inside of the castle was comprised of a proper small village with its own roads, a square, a tower and the church dedicated to S. Ambrogio. It was built on the foundation of a quadrangular Roman castrum in the 10th Century as a defence against the Hungarians. The rampart and a building used as military barracks in 1883 remain of the original defensive structure. Various events, like summer concerts, are held here.
