Castle Angera in Arona has a fortified gateway, which is probably a watchtower of Roman origin. It was modified by the Lombards, as well as the Viscontis and the Borromeos, so it has changed somewhat over the centuries. The Maschio tower dominates the first courtyard and just beyond is the noble courtyard and the Borromeo residential palazzo. The palazzo is a fascinating building; visit the Ceremony room which has frescoes taken from the Borromeo home in Milan and which include the series on Aesop’s Fables.
