The Castellana caves are found 40 km from Bari and are said to be the most important speleological environment in Italy and Europe. They were discovered in 1938 by Franco Anelli and now around three kilometres of underground alleys have been explored, enabling visitors to see two routes which include huge stalagmites and stalactites There are decorated caves such as the ‘White Cave’, the ‘Altar Cave’, the ‘Dome Cave’ and the ‘Nativity Passage’, where a stalagmite can be see resembling Mother Mary, called Madonnina delle Grotte
