Castiglione di Sicilia was transformed into a fortress during the Arab era, and became a Royal City under the Norman and Swabian dynasties. Today, the Leone Castle is much ruined but still dominates this small town. It can be found atop a high rocky spur, where it once served as a guarding post. From the castle there are beautiful views of the town as well as the Etna volcano. The remains of a grandiose Arab bridge are visible, and to the East are the remains of a fortress of the 8th Century BC.
