Carate Urio is located on the western shore of Lake Como and comprises two separate centres. Urio affords a wonderful panoramic position facing the lake and has many villas. The remains of an impressive castle are now incorporated into the 18th Century villa - the headquarters of the International Centre of Studies of Opus Dei. Carate Lario has an interesting layout with its ancient houses and stepped lanes. In this area, the remains of Gallic tombs and of the Roman civilisation have been discovered
