The University of Bologna has one of the most ancient Botanical gardens in Italy that was founded in 1568 by Ulisse Aldrovandi. Visitors can expect to find upwards of 5,000 different local and exotic plants that cover a surface area of about two hectares. There are three greenhouses in the gardens with a huge variety of tropical plants, namely ferns, species of orchids and succulent plants while other sections contain officinal plants, ornamental plants and the park wood.
