At one time the Bosco di Cerano (Cerano Forest) covered the majority of the coast around Brindisi. The reserve now has an area of around 1000 hectares and is also known as Tramazzone. The wood contains indigenous plant species and therefore its protection is extremely important; among them are Holm oaks, elms and hop hornbeams. Fauna here include numerous species of reptiles and amphibians, some of which are listed in the Red Book of Animals of Italy - the most significant is the Italian tree frog (Hyla intermedia).
